How one recycling plant is using AI to help make sorting process easier, faster

Murphy Road Recycling connected with Greyparrot , whose AI-powered material analyzers are installed in the All American MRF to do a feature for CBS News.

Ambarish Mitra, the founder of Greyparrot, flew to Connecticut from the UK to visit our facility and spend some time with the crew who installed and maintain the analyzers. These analyzers use AI to identify materials going through the MRF, giving real time insight into the material stream. This data is used to provide quality control information, which is then used to adjust the system to improve efficiency and effectiveness. The CBS crew interviewed both Ambarish and our Director of Operations Jonathan Murray to discuss the relationship between advanced technology and the recycling industry.

The CBS News feature aired in November and gained over 40 million nationwide impressions. We are incredibly proud of the hard work put in by our All American MRF crew to ensure the facility is constantly achieving excellence, and putting our region in national focus for recycling innovation.

Coming Together for a Cleaner River: Source to Sea Cleanup 2025

On September 27, a team of 10 dedicated volunteers from USA Waste & Recycling and All American Waste rolled up their sleeves and made a real difference along the Connecticut River. As part of the annual Source to Sea Cleanup, we joined forces with hundreds of others across the region, contributing our efforts at the Donald W. Barnes Boat Launch and the surrounding watershed area in Enfield, CT.

The result? 680 pounds of trash and debris removed from the environment in just a few hours.

And the day brought more than just sunny weather, it brought a renewed sense of purpose. From hauling out large debris to collecting smaller litter that can harm local wildlife, every bit of work mattered. Events like this remind us that even simple actions, when done together, can have a powerful impact.

The Source to Sea Cleanup, organized by the Connecticut River Conservancy, is more than a cleanup—it’s a call to action for communities to protect and restore the natural resources we all rely on. Our team was proud to represent our company values in the field, not just by removing waste, but by being part of a larger movement toward sustainability.

What Size Dumpster Do I Need?

Choosing the right dumpster size can be tricky — even for seasoned contractors. There are several factors that determine the most cost-effective and practical option for your project. Below, we break down key things to consider when selecting a dumpster. If you’re unsure, don’t worry — our expert team is just a phone call away at (800) 826-7952 .

Will the Dumpster Hold Everything I Need to Throw Away?

One of the most important questions to ask is whether the dumpster will hold all of your debris . It's always better to choose a slightly larger dumpster than risk running out of space — having to order a second dumpster can double your cost.

Keep in mind: nothing can be sticking out over the top of the container. If you’re disposing of large items like furniture or appliances , check the dimensions of the dumpster to make sure everything will fit.

A general rule:

One full pickup truck load equals roughly 4 cubic yards of material.
So, if you have about 5 truckloads, you’re looking at around 20 cubic yards of debris.

Also note:

Dumpsters 10 yards and larger come with a rear walk-in door for easy loading.
6 yard dumpsters must be loaded from the top.

How Much Weight Can a Dumpster Hold?

Every dumpster rental includes a certain weight allowance , typically between ½ ton to 4 tons , depending on the size and your location. If you exceed that weight, additional charges are applied per ton prorated .

For most household or construction debris, this isn’t usually a concern. However, if you're disposing of heavy materials like concrete, asphalt, or dirt , be sure to ask about our special containers for dense materials .

Will the Dumpster Fit On My Property?

Once you've chosen a size, it's important to ensure there's enough space on your property for the dumpster to be delivered. We provide wooden boards upon request to place under the dumpster to protect your driveway or yard.

Here are a few guidelines:

Driveway placement : No permit or waiver required.
Yard placement : A waiver may be needed.
Street placement : A permit might be required — call us for details.
Ensure there are no low-hanging wires or tree branches that could obstruct the truck.

What Kind of Truck Will Deliver My Dumpster?

We use three types of delivery trucks based on the dumpster size:

Roll-Off Trucks (10–30 yard containers)
Needs ~60 feet of length and 18 feet of vertical clearance

Hook Lift Trucks (10–15 yard containers)
Needs ~50 feet of length and 12 feet of vertical clearance

Container Trucks (front and read load yard containers)
Needs ~12 feet of clearance

Are There Any Extra Fees to Watch For?

While we aim to make pricing simple and transparent, there are a few additional fees you should be aware of:

Overweight charges : If you exceed the included tonnage.
Rental extension fees : Most rentals include 7 days free , with a $10/day fee afterward.
Special item fees : Items like mattresses, tires, or appliances containing refrigerant (like Freon) may incur extra charges.

At All American Waste , we don’t automatically pick up your dumpster at the end of the rental. Instead, we give you the flexibility to finish your project and call us when you’re ready — just give us 24 hours’ notice for pickup.

Items That May Incur Extra Fees

Mattresses & Box Springs – $30-$75 each
Car Tires – $20 each
Truck Tires – $35 each
Propane Tanks (empty) – $35 each
Batteries (Automotive, power tool, e-device [such as scooters]) – $50 per item
Items containing or that have contained refrigerant (like Freon) (e.g., refrigerators, AC units) – $50 per item. Other "white" appliances such as stoves, dryers, washers etc. are accepted at no extra charge.

What Can't Go in the Dumpster?

Some items are strictly prohibited due to safety or environmental regulations. These include:

Liquid Paint (empty/dried cans are OK with the cover removed)
Asbestos
Poisons or Toxins
Liquid Waste
Chemicals (liquid or dry)
Combustible Items
Car Batteries
Lithium-Ion Batteries
Gasoline
Electronic devices (Vape pens, computers, tablets, etc.)

Other prohibited items include flammables, nonempty propane tanks, oil, solar panels, batteries of any kind, equipment or large excavator tires.

Planning a cleanup or renovation project? You’ve picked the right dumpster size, calculated the space you’ll need — and then suddenly realize: you might be over the weight limit . Don't panic — there are a few smart ways to reduce the overall weight of your load and avoid overage fees.

Whether you're renting a dumpster for household junk , yard waste , or light construction debris, these tips can help keep your tonnage — and your costs — under control.

Understand Dumpster Weight Limits

Most temporary dumpster rentals include a specific weight allowance based on the size of the container. If you exceed this limit, you’ll be charged an overage fee , usually ranging from $120 to $160 per ton .

For example, a 15-yard dumpster might include 2 tons of material. Go over that, and you're looking at additional costs. Luckily, with a few proactive steps, you can avoid tipping the scales.

1. Cover Your Dumpster to Keep Out Rain and Snow

Water adds weight — fast. Since most residential dumpsters are open-top , rain, snow, sleet, and hail can soak your contents and dramatically increase tonnage.

Absorbent items like:

Mattresses
Clothing
Upholstered furniture
Cardboard or paper items

…will soak up moisture and quickly make your dumpster heavier.

Tip : Cover your dumpster with a tarp when it’s not in use. Secure it with rocks, bungee cords, wooden planks, or filled containers. This will:

Keep precipitation out
Reduce weight
Deter others from sneaking trash into your container

2. Recycle Whenever Possible

Before you start tossing everything in the dumpster, check if your local recycling programs can take certain items off your hands for free.

✔ Appliances containing refrigerant (like Freon) (including fridges or AC units) are often subject to disposal fees — but many towns offer free pickup .

✔ Furniture or large recyclable items might also be eligible for free collection through your town's public works department.

✔ Clean fill materials (such as uncontaminated soil, rocks, and stones) might be accepted by landscaping companies or fill sites — and some might even pay you for them!

✔ Compost food waste if your town offers a program. Many Connecticut and Massachusetts towns are now launching food scraps recycling initiatives , so check your local resources.

3. Donate, Sell, or Give Away What You Can

If you’re tossing items that still have life in them, consider donating or giving them away before tossing them in the dumpster.

List items for free or for sale on Facebook Marketplace , or local community boards
Hold a yard sale before your cleanup starts
Place items curbside with a “FREE” sign — you’d be surprised how quickly they go

Murphy Road Recycling Receives Gold for All American MRF Glass Certification

The Glass Recycling Coalition (GRC) announced Murphy Road Recycling as a recipient of a gold-level certification for its All American material recovery facility (MRF) in Berlin, Connecticut. The approximately $40 million single-stream MRF started operations in 2022 and features a state-of-the-art processing system that includes optical sorters, artificial intelligence, and robotics supplied by Van Dyk Recycling Solutions.

The All American MRF also uses glass cleaning equipment including a glass breaker, vibrating table screen, secondary fines screen, and vacuum system. The MRF sends its clean glass to processors that convert the material into cullet used for manufacturing glass containers, fine powders that are used in fiberglass insulation, and ground glass used as pozzolan (a cement binder). Happy Holidays to all and a very fun filled New Year. How to make recycling simple and easy to understand for (circular economy reuse) holiday wrapping, packaging, and entertainment waste. All paper can be recycled EXCEPT if it has glitter, or imprinted with shiny metallic like materials, if it reflects light, do not recycle. Plastics with a neck and certainly nothing that is made up of multi-layers (laminates). All the ribbon, bows, plastic film, foam packaging go into the trash bin. Imagine standing over a picking line and the objective is to sort the most reusable and best quality materials. There are end markets for quality cardboard (OCC), mixed wastepaper (everything paper other than OCC, except the shiny metallic wrapping paper), Plastics #1, #2 and #5 (water bottles, detergent bottles, and yogurt cups) and all metal cans (food and beverage) should be recycled.

Put items in the recycling cart separated and loose not in a bag or box and all items should be clean and dry.

Recycle

Paper gift wrap and envelopes that are plain (multi-color and images ok) and non-laminated:

o No glitter.

o No metal or shinny surfaces - if it can reflect light put it in the trash.

o No laminates - multi-layered - most flexible food/candy packaging.

Boxes:

o Cardboard and paper boxes - ideally flattened out and remove the tape and Styrofoam peanuts and plastic air-pocket packing material.

Bottles Plastic - look on the bottom of a bottle, if it shows the number: 1, 2 and 5 get recycled.

o Rinsed and cleaned plastic with a neck - water, detergent, beverage (PET - #1 and HDPE - #2).

o Plastic bottles without a neck - yogurt, cottage cheese not Keurig cups it has metal foil (polypropylene - PP - #5).

Cans

o Steel - food, soup, fruit, and vegetables.

o Aluminum - beer, soda, specialty drinks.

Bottles Glass:

o Wine, champagne, beer.

Trash

Ribbons, bows, and decorations (Christmas lights, garland).
Packing materials:

o Bubble wrap, plastic films wrapped around a toy or gift, cellophane wrapping paper.

o Foam - peanuts or Styrofoam.

o Plastic air-filled packing materials.

Plastic

o Plastic bottles without a neck with non-plastic seals - Keurig cups.

o All film - dry cleaner bags, grocery bags, cellophane wrapping paper, plastic wrapped presents.

o Laminated plastics - food packaging any plastic that is clearly multi-layered is mixing too many chemistries to be recycled in a post-consumer system.

o Forks, utensils, straws.

Food waste - if you do not have home composting, it all goes into the trash.

MRF Upgrades Technology To Refine Fiber Sorting

The consumer recyclables stream has changed a lot in the last two decades, and a Connecticut MRF recently invested $40 million in an upgrade focused on more granular fiber recovery and worker safety.

Frank M. Antonacci, chief operating officer of Murphy Road Recycling, told Resource Recycling that the Enfield, Conn. MRF’s original system was one of the first single-stream systems in the area when it was installed in 2005.

“It was good at handling the material we got back then, at that volume,” Antonacci said, but as the business grew and technology changes, upgrades were needed.

Frank Antonacci says he’s lost track of how many tours he’s led of the All American Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Berlin, Conn., which handles material from across the Nutmeg State and Western Mass.

“Suffice it to say, it’s a big number,” said Antonacci, a principal with Murphy Road Recycling, an operator of several recycling facilities, which, in partnership with Van Dyk Recycling Solutions, suppliers of the system’s equipment, opened the state-of-the-art facility in early 2022.

Since then, in addition to overseeing this intriguing operation, which processes more than 50 tons of recyclable material an hour, Antonacci and Jonathan Murray, director of Operations for Murphy Road Recycling, have been leading individuals and groups through the massive facility to show them what goes on there and why this operation is among the most advanced of its kind in the country — and the world, for that matter...

Berlin Solar Project completed providing 350,000 kWh of clean energy to All-American MRF single-stream recycling facility

Phase 1 installation of a solar panel system that can help offset electrical use was recently completed at our Murphy Road Recycling site on Christian Lane in Berlin.

Phase 1 installation of a solar panel system that can help offset electrical use was recently completed at our Murphy Road Recycling site on Christian Lane in Berlin. The project will provide energy starting in December to the All American MRF single-stream processing facility. With the 200kW rooftop system providing approximately 350,000 kWh of energy per year, about 25% of the site’s annual electricity use will be covered, which will significantly help to subsidize the energy cost to run the facility. At a time when electricity costs are rising drastically, stabilizing costs at the facility will help keep the processing costs competitive.

Phase 2 of the solar project is in the works for next year to provide the remainder of the Berlin facilities’ electric use and further our commitment to our communities and the environment.

With the completion of these projects, the company’s total solar output is over 2,500,000 kWh per year, or 25% of the total electricity usage and is continually climbing. Solar power has many benefits , including reducing greenhouse gas emissions like CO2 and other dangerous pollutants like sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. These projects, including our solar powered CNG station in East Windsor, conversion to clean natural gas trucks, demonstrate our dedication to the environment and our commitment to our communities.

FOURTH OF JULY TIP: FLAG DISPOSAL

On a recent site visit in Waterbury, John Pizzimenti noticed a stack of American flags on Chris Follen’s desk. When he asked what they were for, Chris stated that they were all pulled off the tipping floor. Chris offered a little more insight into why they are pulled off the floor, and what it means to him personally to make sure they are properly disposed:

When I was a teenager, I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps- he was in the United States Marine Corp (1964-1969), so I joined an organization called Young Marines sponsored by the Marine Corp League. Most of the adults were retired or former Marines. This organization promotes all the qualities teenagers need to develop, including myself, and promote becoming disciplined, respectful, handle authority and physically fit while gaining a greater understanding of sacrifice. Putting others before themselves. They put those who want to be part of something bigger on the path to Parris Island. The Young Marines teaches self-discipline, a respect for others, and Parris Island makes Marines. I joined at the age of 14 until I was eligible to walk into a recruiting station.

As a kid, my father would always tell me never let the flag touch the ground. I didn’t understand why at the time, I thought it was just out of respect for our great country and I didn’t want to get yelled at if he saw it dragging on our deck.

When the Marine Corp League office in White Plains, N.Y. started putting flag drop off containers at some post offices in Westchester, we painted them in U.S.M.C. scarlet and gold and marked them as such. When they were filled, the flags would be properly disposed of. Here is the proper protocol and procedure for flag disposal. I have found out that most V.F.W.’s and American Legion posts also have flag drop off bins.

When disposing of the flag, DO the following:

Fold in the traditional triangle for stowage, never wadded up.
Proper disposal is by fire. It is important that the fire be fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag.
Place the flag on the fire.
The individual(s) disposing of the flag come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and have a brief period of silent reflection.
After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished, and the ashes buried.
Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.
June 14 is Flag Day and is the most appropriate day for this ceremony.

I started collecting flags from the waste stream years ago because as marines we took an oath to protect what it stands for. The poem by Francis Scott Key which later became the Star-Spangled Banner explains why we never let the flag touch the floor, let alone be thrown out in the trash. I guess I made it a silent personal crusade to save as many flags as I can out of respect for those who have defended and all who have protected her. I have instructed the guys I work with to save any flags we see.

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH RECYCLING?

I am sure many of you, given the nature of your employment, are seen as the resident recycling expert at any summer picnic, family gathering, or kids sports event. I know I am. More than ever “RECYCLING” is the subject of everyday conversation and concern, sparked by a deepening concern by the general public regarding the environment, along with the considerable shifts in recycling markets worldwide turning the recycling business model on its head! Headlines about recycling are everywhere, and my goal is to arm you with some real answers from our industry leader’s perspective regarding the present and future of recycling in our business and in our communities and dispel some commonly held, misleading ideas.

Here are some of the questions and answers.

Is it true that we don’t recycle anymore because China stopped taking the stuff?

No, none of our companies have changed our policies regarding handling of recyclables. We have found different markets for all the recycling commodities, although they are at much different prices than they once were. In some cases, we are even paying to ensure that material we collect as recyclables are being recycled or reused. We have also invested in our facilities to deal with the increased contamination we have seen in the recycling stream.

What did China do that ruined the recycling market so much?

China enacted a policy called the “National Sword” on January 1, 2018. This policy essentially made it impossible to import recyclables from outside of China into the country. This was a major problem as China previously purchased 70% of the recyclables generated in the United States and an even higher percentage from the United States coastal states. The domestic and global market for recyclables became flooded with material causing the prices for the commodities to plummet.

Why did the cost of recycling go up so much?

The cost of recycling to the customer- whether a municipality, an individual resident, or a commercial customer- did not rise because costs went up, but rather because the value of the recycling stream fell and that value was used to offset much of the cost to the customer.

How much did the recycling values drop?

The market for recyclables fell to the lowest levels we have ever seen. Cardboard once sold for $175/ ton dropping to $25/ ton while newspaper once fetched over $100/ ton and now can cost upwards of $50/ton to ensure that it goes to a recycler. The prices are end market prices that do not account for costs to collect, process, package and market the materials.

Is it even worth recycling if it may cost as much as trash now?

Yes, for many reasons:

While we are experiencing one of the most challenging environments we have seen for recycling, commodity pricing is cyclical and historically we have seen recovery from other challenging times.
Especially in the northeast, there is a finite space for final disposal capacity. Right now, about 30% of the materials we discard will never see a burnplant or landfill rather they are processed through local recycling infrastructure to be used in new products. Practically speaking, the disposal capacity just does not exist to handle these materials if they were no longer put through the recycling infrastructure. Abandoning recycling would cause pricing to skyrocket on all waste streams.
Recycling is an investment in the future of our environment. There is value in ensuring that materials are used and reused as many times as possible until we truly must dispose of them.

How do things get better for recycling?

Markets need to develop around the world, especially in the United States to handle these materials. On the positive side of the story many shuttered old paper mills are being purchased, revamped and reopened throughout the United States to take advantage of the supply domestically. The domestic development of these markets may provide the type of stability and opportunity in recycling like the discovery of natural gas did for the energy markets in the United States and would lead to a much more stable and sustainable recycling model for decades to come.

What can I do?

Recycle right, and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Since recycling became mainstream in 1994, the recycling stream has gradually become dirtier and dirtier. Much of this contamination (as we call it in the industry) comes from good intentioned customers seeking to recycle as much as possible and putting non-recyclables (contamination) in the recycling bin because it feels good to think you are recycling. The truth is that this “wishful recycling” contaminates the whole stream and makes it harder to sort out and market the right recyclables. There is a great resource at http://www.recyclect.com/ which shows you “what’s in and what’s out” of your recycling bin. This will not only improve the quality of our materials that we market, but more importantly it will keep our fellow teammates safer at our recycling facilities.

You can also encourage your local communities and politicians to support the local recycling infrastructure and the value it brings to all communities. Recycling and the accompanying services provide for all our families and protect the environment for generations to come. We must ensure that uninformed politicians and public officials do not make uneducated and shortsighted decisions that could be detrimental to the future of recycling.

Komal Charania joined EREF in March 2017. She graduated with honors in May 2018 with a degree from North Carolina State University in Environmental Engineering. At EREF, she worked on the State of Practice of Landfill Leachate Management and Treatment in the U.S. project (see description below) within the Data and Policy program. This involved gathering available leachate quality and quantity data in order to get a better understanding of the state of leachate generation, treatment, and management in the United States. In February 2018, she attended GWMS with EREF and presented a poster on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in landfills.

RecycleCT Foundation Inc.’s public recycling outreach campaign throughout Connecticut shows how working together can improve recycling rates.

When Sherill Baldwin traveled to Nova Scotia, one of the three Maritime Provinces of Canada, she saw similar signage for recycling throughout the area. Baldwin, an environmental analyst in the sustainable materials management unit at the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) , says as she toured the province, regardless of where she went, she noticed universal messaging with color-coded signage for recycling being used across the province.

Baldwin brought this idea back to Connecticut. She serves as staff support for the RecycleCT Foundation Inc. , a Hartford, Connecticut-based state-chartered fund that helps to raise public awareness and participation in recycling. The fund combines public and private resources to support the state’s recycling goals and material management strategies.

ALL AMERICAN WASTE DRIVERS PARTICIPATE IN THE ANNUAL TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

This past weekend the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut (MTAC) hosted its annual Truck Driving Championships at the FedEx Freight Facility in Windsor Locks. All American Waste proudly sent drivers Scott Stoeckle Sr. (AAW- New Milford) and Irving Martinez Jr. (AAW- New Haven) to represent our company this year! Both of these drivers did a great job in all aspects of the competition and were both very close to placing in their division!

On Saturday, April 21, two All American Waste drivers, Phill Zabo and “Zak” Zollie Hyman, along with Gary Hoefling and Ken Vallera, participated in the Town of Hamden’s Earth Day event. We brought a front load and a side load truck to the “touch-a-truck” part of the event, which was held at Hamden High School. The event ran from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. where we met with and talked with any and all visitors that stopped by our trucks, including the Town of Hamden’s Recycling coordinator, Haley Starvaggi. Thank you to everyone who made this a fun and successful event!

ALL AMERICAN WASTE HELPS CLEAN UP STREETS IN BRIDGEPORT

The Stratford Historic District organized a cleanup event which our very own John Ortiz participated in and gave out All American Waste sweatshirts to volunteers on April 21, 2018, cleaning up streets in Bridgeport, CT. Along with 11 students participating from Sacred Heart University and other volunteers, we were able to fill 25 bags of trash and help make the neighborhood cleaner. Thank you to the Stratford Historic District for organizing the event, John Ortiz and to all the volunteers who made it a great success!

Unlike other hiring events the morning was put together to give ex-offenders a second chance at rebuilding their lives. Ken Vallera, Director of Operations and Mike Lauro, Human Resources Manager, represented All American Waste at the cities event. Over 60 Job seekers were present, looking for varied types of positions. From participating in local events to hiring local individuals, All American Waste is committed to being an integral part of the communities in which we serve.

All American Waste has a deep commitment to the wellness of our employees. In addition to providing great health insurance benefits, we have a wellness committee, a safety team, and a commitment to technology that is for the benefit of each and every employee.

Our wellness committee runs programs throughout the year to teach our team about healthy living. Throughout the summer, we host healthy picnics at each of our sites teaching individuals the benefits of making the right choices when deciding what to eat. This healthy eating translated into our fall “Biggest Loser” competition. As a company, we lost 802 pounds in six weeks of competition! Our employees loved it and we will be running the program again continuing the message of healthy living.

While our wellness committee teaches us about how to live a healthier lifestyle, our safety team is committed to the wellness of employees on the job. The team analyzes any potential job hazards and what we can do to mitigate them to keep our employees in top shape. Looking at employee safety and wellness is what brings technology to our industry. While in years past you would see our workers lifting heavy trash cans and recycling bins that lead to injuries, we now use automated hydraulic systems operated by a joystick so employees can have less strain and prevent injuries.

We continually strive to make our employees safer on the job and are even launching a “Safety Boot Program” where we will provide our safety sensitive employees with a Safety Boot allowance each year to help reduce the risk of injuries. Another step forward for the health and safety of our employees!

Whether it is creating programs for the health of our employees or preventing injuries with technology, All American Waste is committed to our team’s wellness.

SOURCE TO SEA CLEANUP 2016

The Connecticut River Watershed Council’s (CRWC) 20th Annual Source To Sea Cleanup was held this past Friday and Saturday, September 23-24. From their website www.ctriver.org : “The Source to Sea Cleanup is an annual trash cleanup of the Connecticut River system – rivers, streams and banks, parks, boat launches, trails and more. Each fall, thousands of volunteers of all ages and abilities head out to places of their choice all along the four-state watershed (NH, VT, MA, CT) to clean the Connecticut River and its tributaries on foot or by boat.”

All American Waste was a sponsor and also assembled a group of volunteers to help with the event. The group included employees and their friends and families, totaling 38 volunteers of all ages, from throughout the state meeting at the Barnes Boat Launch on S River Street in Enfield, CT. From there the group split up to clean the surrounding area along the Connecticut River. Some went on kayaks to access harder to reach areas, some went down the street to Parsons Road, while others spread out to clean other areas along the river. The combined effort brought in over 2.5 tons of waste along the river in our location alone, including a couch, mattress, chairs and tires, along with many bags of trash.

CUSTOMER SERVICE – WHAT MAKES US THE BEST?

To be the best you must first have a clear understanding of what customer service is; as it is such a diverse area. Most people think customer service is a department that treats customers with a friendly attitude and tries to resolve their problem or question as efficiently as possible. This is true, however, there is so much more that has to happen for a customer to be serviced to their satisfaction. For example, if a customer calls us to change the removal date of their container, we have to then update the scheduling which must be relayed to the driver through dispatch. The route must be subsequently recalculated to ensure other customers experience are not effected as the driver may have been counting on the removal to make his next delivery. This is simply one example of how customer service is truly handled by the whole company instead of just the Customer Service Department. In our company, the whole company participates in customer service. We believe working as a team across all departments is what truly makes an exceptional customer service experience.

Michael Jordan is considered to be one of the best basketball players of all time. However, despite his great skill he could not have won any championships without the assistance and support of his team. His fellow teammates would aid him on the court by doing things like setting a pick for Jordan to make the crucial shot or making the tough pass to him for a game changing layup. He had such a long time in the spotlight due to his good team and great teamwork.

We hope you were among the thousands of people who came out and enjoyed the New Milford Fireworks Celebration on Saturday, July 2 nd . The Green was the place to be as the Opening Ceremony kicked off with Ray Plue singing our National Anthem. Ray also dedicated a memorial plaque (that can be found near one of the trees by the bandstand) to our dear friend and voice of New Milford Curtis Thompson. The Rev. Alex da Silva Souto, Pastor at the New Milford United Methodist Church delivered the invocation, followed by a few words shared by Chamber President Darren Piper and Senator Richard Blumenthal. As folks enjoyed the New Milford Lions Club Carnival on Young’s Field, The Woman’s Club of Greater New Milford constructed a delicious birthday cake and Perfect Timing entertained everyone on the Green. The finale of brilliant fireworks topped off this wonderful night of community celebration.

The Greater New Milford Chamber of Commerce would like to thank everyone who supported the July 2 nd downtown events to celebrate America’s Birthday.

Special thanks to Fire Marshal Brian Ohmen and the members of the Gaylordsville Volunteer Fire Department who were on site all day long watching over the fireworks display. On February 25, 2016, The Business Council of Fairfield County, through its Wellness Roundtable, identified 49 Connecticut employers who are doing something special to promote a healthy workplace and assist all employees to live healthier lives.

All American Waste and its family of companies was recognized as one of those 49 with placement in the Gold Category of Distinction.

“As I have been involved with this program since its inception, I continue to be impressed with the level of commitment these companies have devoted to wellness within their workplaces,” commented Matthew Fair, First Vice President, First Niagara Risk Management Inc. and co-chair of the 2016 Healthy Workplaces Employer Recognition Program. “Regardless of company size, these honorees have used innovative approaches to not just engage, but to measure the effectiveness of their programs over the long-term.”

All American Waste employees have been working hard to develop healthier strategies through increased efforts to quit smoking, lose weight, increase activity, and more. Ken Vallera, Director of Sales & Operations & Joe Engravalle, Major Account Manager of All American Waste presented a donation to the Connecticut Food Bank. The funds will support the Connecticut Food Bank’s relocation to its new, state-of-the-art headquarters and distribution center in Wallingford. The new facility offers double the warehouse capacity of the Food Bank’s former locations in East Haven and Waterbury combined. Interim CEO Paul O’Leary accepted the donation for the Connecticut Food Bank and took team members from All American Waste on a tour of the building.

The Connecticut Food Bank is the state’s non-profit leader in the fight against hunger and the largest provider of charitable food donations. Some 700 partners and programs depend on the Connecticut Food Bank as a lifeline to nutritious food for the communities they serve. The Connecticut Food Bank partnered last year with retailers, donors, volunteers and growers to provide enough food to prepare more than 18 million meals to more than 300,000 people across 127 cities and towns in six Connecticut counties.

On Wednesday, December 9, 2015, All American Waste attended the celebration at Stony Creek Brewery in Branford, CT to salute the Closer to Free Riders, Volunteers & Sponsors who went above and beyond in all fundraising efforts for the 2015 5th annual Closer to Free ride to benefit the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven that took place on September 12, 2015.

Over 1,200 riders & 500 volunteers made this year’s event a huge success. $2.2 million was raised to bring us Closer to Free with 100% of the riders & volunteer fundraising going directly to Smilow & Yale Cancer Center due to the generosity of the sponsors such as All American Waste. This is the 5th year that All American Waste is proud to have been a premier sponsor. In attendance at this event was Joe Engravalle of All American Waste.

While out on a call yesterday morning we lost the chain assembly for our OnSpot automatic tire chains. Fearing we’d be in a jam for this weekend’s storm, the guys from All American Waste in New Milford stepped in and donated the parts we needed to get back in the game. They even sent a service truck and crew up to handle the repair.

It’s very reassuring to know that we’ve got such great neighbors looking after us.”

All American Waste recently had a group of volunteers participate in the Connecticut River Watershed Council’s Source To Sea annual cleanup on September 27. We had a nice turnout and amazing weather while cleaning up near the Scantic River on Bailey Road in Enfield, CT.

FOOD WASTE RECYCLING REMAINS A TOUGH TASK IN CONNECTICUT

Bridgewate r — With a shout of “BLT!” as lunchtime peaks at the historic Bridgewater Village Store , chef Damian Krieg is doing pretty much the same thing he’s done for more than seven years – cranking out sandwiches, dishing up fresh soups and serving a changing array of specials.

But there is one difference, nearly imperceptible as he finishes making a king-size bowl of cole slaw during the increasingly infrequent lulls in the action. For the last three months, instead of dumping the cores of the cabbage and onions, ends of the carrots and the guts of the green peppers into the trash with everything else, he has been dropping them into a bucket beneath his workstation.

It’s his new compost bucket – part of a first-in-the-state curbside food waste pickup project in this largely rural southwestern Connecticut town.

“Anything that is biodegradable goes into the compost heap. You could even use paper which is biodegradable,” Krieg says. “The baker uses one upstairs and just before she leaves she brings her bag down here. We combine them with that. Sometimes we do have to empty them twice day.”

That means dumping them into a larger barrel behind the store. That barrel stays locked to keep critters and other undesirables out until its contents are picked up every Friday and taken a few miles away to the New Milford Farms compost facility where they will be made into soil products.

Simple? In theory, yes. But Connecticut’s efforts to wrench itself off the 25 percent recycling rate it has been stuck on for years (by doing things like finding other ways to handle its largest component – the one-third that is food waste and other organics) has been a slow go. Law changes in 2011 that mandated recycling large volume commercial food waste have been tough to implement.

So Connecticut lags as other states, as well as large cities like New York, San Francisco and Toronto, and many areas in Europe, are well into food waste disposal programs.

Today is National Garbage Collector Day! Celebrate by supporting all the workers who collect our trash, recyclables and other garbage!

The Beginning

As you can imagine, the world would be a disgusting place without the garbage man. For many years people burned waste, fed it to animals, buried it, and most commonly, tossed it over their shoulder. Some cities became buried, and built over the waste, and others pioneered new ways to save their cities from vermin and disease. Recycling began as a necessity and ended up in present day as a responsibility to the environment.

The most amazing thing about garbage collection is the fact that it was there in the beginning and it will be there in the end. It was part of the package deal when we hit this planet. Our consumerism in the United States only gets larger every day. This brief history summarizes some facts and fiction that helped keep our planet clean.

Earliest Garbage Regulation Efforts

3000 B.C. – The first landfill is developed when Knossos, Crete digs large holes for refuse. Garbage is dumped and filled with dirt at various levels.

2000 B.C. – China develops methods of Composting/Recycling, and recycling bronze for later use.

500 B.C. – Athens, Greece develops new law claiming garbage must be dumped at least one mile from the city.

CHRUCH STREET SCHOOL PLAYDAY

June 1, 2014 in Woodbridge, CT. All American Waste participated in Touch A Truck 2014 where kids could some see, touch and sit in over 20 vehicles. There was a trackless train, bouncy slide, food and other family friendly activities including a free swim.

BRIDGEWATER STARTS RESIDENTIAL CURBSIDE PICKUP OF FOOD WASTE PILOT PROJECT

The town of Bridgewater will be the first in Connecticut to offer curbside pickup of food scraps and organic waste. 130 families in the town have volunteered to be a part of the 6 month pilot project. They will have their food scraps and organic waste picked up weekly by All American Waste and brought to either New Milford Farms or New England Compost in Danbury. After the 6 month pilot has concluded, the families participating will receive a bag of compost material to use with the soil in their yards.

A ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the launch of the project was held at The Burnham School on Friday, April 4, 2014. Speakers included Jen Iannucci, Assistant Director of Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority, Eric Frederickson of All American Waste and Macky McCleary, Deputy Commissioner of DEEP.

All American Waste offers a wide range of services including options for food scraps/organics collection and recycling.
